Day 5 - Our Journey to The Hague!

Tony, with his expert driving skill and the ability to drive on the right side of the road, got us safely to Den Haag (The Hague) at 9.30pm. But along the way we saw many, many amazing sights.

We said goodbye to Koblenz at about 11.30 am, promising that we will return again someday, and headed north west.

Our journey so far.
The Autobahn system in Germany is so efficient and able to get loads of people to their destinations without any fuss (this is my holiday experience - it could be different for the locals).  The speed limit is unlimited.  At one stage we were driving at 140k/h and it was like we were standing still as the cars in the left lane went whizzing by!

Our first stop was Aachen (pronounced Arken).  As we drove into Aachen I thought it was pretty boring but Tony said the Altstadt (old city) is really beautiful.  And he was right!  It is the tourist area but the place to go to see the beautiful architecture of the old buildings.

After stopping for lunch and a coffee we drove to Drielandenpunt (3 countries point - it's the place where 3 countries meet ..... Germany, Belgium and Netherlands)  - haha! I can now say that I've been to Belgium!

Here's a bit on info about it.  Click here.

The viewing tower overlooking the 3 countries - Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands
A Dutch band having fun playing at the top of the viewing tower!
Tony in 3 countries at once.

Now, here's a bit of a geography lesson for you - it's probably more for me as you are all clever.  The Netherlands is the country and Holland is a one of 12 provinces where The Hague is the capital.  Now, why I say this is that our next stop was Maastricht. Which is the main city of Limburg which is a province of The Netherlands

But here's a very entertaining video that explains all about The Netherlands.

Our next stop is Maastricht.  Again it looked pretty ordinary until we found the oude stad (the old city).  We found a lovely cafe to have dinner before the 2.5 hr drive to The Hague.

Our Tapas for 2. Prachtig (Dutch for wonderful)
And non alcoholic beer for Tony the driver - which was heerlijk (Dutch for delicious)
While we were  having dinner there wasn't a lot to do but just sit relax, eat, have a drink or two and people watch.  Now ladies who doesn't like to people watch?

We arrived in Den Haag (The Hague) at around 9.30 got settled in had a cuppa and then crashed.  Oh and we booked into a Hotel called the New Babylon and it just so happens to be on top of a shopping centre.  Oooppps!

Tomorrow we are off to Amsterdam in the afternoon by train.  We will stay for dinner and take in the sights.
