Day 4 - Our Train Trip to Koeln!

Warning!!! a huge amount of photos are on this post!

I have to say that the Germans are good at:
  • preserving the old
  • designing the new
Just the local shopping centre in Koblenz
  • working hard
  • and knowing how to de-stress
  • and speaking English is kein problem at all!  (no problem at all!)

With breakfast and blogging out of the way.....we were off to Koeln.

Koeln Bahnof
The 2 reasons why we wanted to go to Koeln was to visit the Dom (church) and to have a Koelsch bier (pronounced Kurlsh beer and it's beer from Cologne).  Now we can buy Koelsch beer anywhere in Germany but isn't it better to drink it at the source.....yep we thought so too!

When we arrived at the Koeln Bahnhof and stepped outside we were met with the ginormous (my word for gigantic and enormous - haha tricked you!) structure of the Dom.  It is an amazing piece of architecture and completely surrounded by modern day life.  It stands there proud and a bit dirty while modern day continues on.  If you walk along without looking up you would absolutely miss it.

Koeln was quite hot and very crowded with at lot of damn tourists everywhere.  We were in search for a cool bier now!

I don't know how we did it but we stumbled upon the shopping quarter of Koeln, but don't worry we were all shopped out today. Tony needed to get his internet gadget thingy working and I needed to post a post card.  Once that was done we were free to find a cooler place to sit and relax and have a bier.
Take a close look at this photo and please tell me how they do this????
Great local entertainment
I must have been tired today as we went passed a fabric shop and  I didn't want to look in. (Oh! mein Gott, das ist nicht gut)  I'll let you work that one out yourselves.

We walked towards the river and found a beautiful haven of alfresco cafes with tree lined coolness.  We knew we were in the right place.  Now to find just the right cafe for us.

Even though the biers are at a comfortable 8 degrees it didn't matter it was a beautiful amber liquid for the weary travellers.

Our drinking place of choice.

This reminds me of Venice!
The owner of the pub we had a drink at.
Once finished with Koeln we headed back to Koblenz and the quaintness of the town.  And as the sun doesn't set till 9.08pm we still had time to explore the town.

Koblenz is a beautiful town and worth staying for quiet a few more days.  As I said the Germans are good at the old and the new.  We passed another shopping mall and managed to get a massage.....2,50 euro (that's $3.75 AU haha! more bargains for Tony).  And across the street is the old quarter of Koblenz complete with a festival happening.  Truly a wunderschoen town to be in.

Look one way and it's the shopping centre ....
... look the other way and it's a festival happening in the old part of Koblenz.

How civilised to have your mate with you when you go out to eat with friends.

But I'm told that there is a lot more like this throughout Germany.

Now for the night time photos of Koblenz.

Green lighting under a bridge
Complimentary Ouzo at the local Greek restaurant.....I just had to try!

Tomorrow we are off to Holland for 3 days to visit The Hague (where Tony used to work for 2 years in the '80's) and to Amsterdam.....I have it on great authority that the delicacies of Amsterdam are out of this world ;)  Also we are going to visit Delft where they make beautiful pottery.

p.s. I forgot to tell you we went to Aldi to stock up on supplies and found a lovely Aussie Red for 2,99 euro.  Of course we had to buy it to see what a $4.50 bottle of Australian Red tastes like.....will give you an update soon.

p.s.s. we are having breakfast before we head off to Holland and a contingency of French grey nomads invades the restaurant.  One gorgeous french lady started to speak to us and, of course, we tried to splutter that we don't speak french.  Ha ha ha! and I thought maybe she thinks everyone should speak french. Mon dieu!
