Day 16 - The Bustling City of Hamburg!

What a shock to go from the lovely quaint country town of Einbeck to the big city of Hamburg (pronounced Harm-borg in German).  But I suppose I had to do it at some stage :)

We had a cruisey morning doing blogs, reading, maybe a little nanna nap and then we actually went on a cruise of the harbour after lunch with Pat, you know the one by now - the crazy Aussie.

Before the cruise Tony and I visited the bombed out church of St. Nicholas.  It was bombed during WWII and was left like that.  It was tidied up but not rebuilt.  Only the steeple and part of the back of the church remain and at the moment the steeple is totally covered in scaffolding as it is being cleaned.  Some of the photos below are from the internet.  Click here for some great information about the church.

The scaffolding around it for cleaning.

This statue depicts the suffering of many from the war.

How it now looks.
How it used to look before it was bombed.
When it was bombed during the war.
The harbour is a very busy one, very industrial and is the second largest port in Europe after Rotterdam and Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany.  Has 1.8 million people.

Trust the Aussies to open the bar!

The famous Hamburg Fish Market

The Hamburg Philarmonic  -  the original budget was 78m Euro and it's now blown out to at least 800m Euro.....and it's not even finished.  Great building though!

Amazing architecture!
More amazing architecture!

Hamburg has more canals than Amsterdam!  Who would have thought!
Hahaha!  our first photo bomb!
We had to go see the well renowned Reeperbahn - the Red Light district of Hamburg.  It really has nothing on Amsterdam but still very interesting.  There are lots of interesting shops, great bars to eat at and of course the ladies in the window.  But the street the where the ladies are is blocked off and children under 18 and women are prohibited......WHAT???  That is crazy!   So we sent Pat in to explore the street.  He said he was really the only one there and the ladies were knocking on the windows to get his attention!
The street in the Reeperbahn that women and children are not allowed!
Pat survived but looking a bit sheepish!
Of course I had to have a peek!

Our Last Supper with Pat before he takes off to Oslo!

We'll be doing a lot more exploring tomorrow around Hamburg so more photos coming!
